On Wednesday evening near Birch Run on Interstate 75, Trooper Popp was conducting a traffic stop when an 81-year-old male in another car struck two patrol cars and Trooper Popp while outside his own vehicle at high speed, killing them both instantly.

This tragic event highlights the risks law enforcement officers encounter on a daily basis during routine traffic stops, even those considered routine. This horrific crash resulted in serious injuries for an 81-year-old driver; nonetheless, she is expected to survive due to medical care for her injuries.
